Helpful hints

What is Greek feta?

When buying feta cheese for our whipped feta dip recipe it is really important to try to find Greek feta. This cheese is made from sheep and / or goat’s milk (as opposed to cow milk that is often used in non-Greek feta). The result is a cheese that is tangy, sharp and so full of amazing flavour. Nothing compares to Greek feta and it is definitely worth looking for, and paying for (it is usually more expensive than feta make with cow’s milk). You can learn more about Greek feta here.

What is Greek yogourt?

Greek yogourt has been a craze for the past few years now, and it should come as no surprise. Greek yogourt is thick, rich and full of tangy flavour. It is made with the same ingredients as regular yogourt but the whey and other liquids have been removed. What you are left with then is a super thick and concentrated yogourt which is high in protein and, because it takes more milk to make the same amount of Greek yogourt as regular yogourt, it tends to be a bit pricier. When looking for Greek yogourt to make our whipped feta dip recipe be sure to stay away from labels that say that a yogourt is Greek-style – this is not the same thing. Greek-style yogourts use added thickeners to get the texture needed, whereas true Greek yogourt uses manual extraction (either a centrifuge or straining in cloth bags) to actually get rid of the liquid. You can read more about Greek yogourt here!

How long does it take to make this whipped feta dip recipe?

Want to know one of our pet peeves? When we look up a recipe and we are told that the preparation time is going to be 30 minutes, and 40 minutes later we’re still chopping vegetables. We hate that! We’re pretty handy in the kitchen, so if it takes us longer than the recipe says it will, we imagine we are not alone. That’s why we try to be generous when we indicate the amount of time something will take.

For this whipped feta dip recipe we have indicated that it will take 10 minutes. That is a true over-statement. It will take you 10 minutes if you factor in the amount of time it will take you to pick your serving bowl, wash your food processor after using it, and gather your children to give it a try. In truth, nothing could be quicker or easier than this recipe. You literally put everything in a food processor, and process until smooth. You don’t even have to add the garnishes if you don’t want to.

What to serve with this whipped feta dip recipe:

Honestly, this dip is so good you could eat it with a spoon! However, if you want to be more civilized, you need to have something to scoop the dip up with. We love to use toasted baguette, pita bread (you can make your own with our super easy recipe), crackers or even veggies like carrot sticks and celery. Even raw sliced zucchini or cucumber would be great!

Can this dip be made ahead?

For sure. If you are planning ahead you can make this whipped feta dip recipe a day or two ahead of serving. Keep it in the refrigerator and add any garnishes to it just before serving.
